Games for Soldiers: Looking for Ideas

I'm working with Games for Soldiers and hopefully some other organizations on compiling a DVD collection of DRM-free, freely distributable freeware pc games for deployed troops.  I'm trying to compile a hand-picked collection of the best games that money can't buy.  These games would be tailored to play on lower end computers/laptops, not requiring the latest and greatest CPU/GPU to play and not requiring an internet connection to play or install.

I'm working on compiling the collection, including faqs/guides/instructions with the games.  Once I've finished compiling it my intention is to send these DVDs out to organizations like Games for Soldiers who will in turn distribute them to deployed troops.

I've been there myself (deployed to Iraq twice) and if you have internet at all you're lucky and it's nice to have something to play in those rare occurrences when you do get spare time.

Of course, I'll be including some Roguelikes.  If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, Roguelikes or otherwise for games to include hit me up!  Just comment below!

  1. Well I'd say Brogue is a no brainer, as well as the classics like ToME, ADOM, Nethack (w/graphical extensions) and Crawl. DoomRL is pretty good as well. Also the original updated to play on modern machines would be neato.

Other good games that are free and non-roguelike...hmmm...I really like Battle for Wesnoth. Spelunky (HTML5 version is supposed to be good but I haven't tried it). Scorched earth was my favorite freeware game for awhile, not sure if it's still around.

All of this guy's games are awesome, Verminest and Matilda Castilla are his best (but they are all good).

Others: Cave Story should have a free English version around somewhere, I liked the game Hurrican, some people loved 'N' (I didn't so much). There are also tons of freeware Supermario Games, like Mario 3: Mario Forever. Ninja Senki was good. Desktop Dungeons has a free version floating around, as does Dungeons of Fayte (a personal fav, i have the source if you can't find an .exe). Crate Box was good. Herocore is good but looks a little cheapy with its black and white graphic style.

Eternal Daughter. Barkely, Shut up and Jam Gaiden.

Those are the ones I can think of that aren't too 'indie' that the average gamer would be turned off. Good luck man.

  3. Thanks! I've already hit up most of those you mentioned so I think we're on the same page. I'm getting close to completing the disc and sending out some dvds. I also ended up adding PC software and ebooks.
